ENDLESS SUMMER FESTIVAL - SA/SP 2014-19-02

Las Vegas 22 août 1973 dinner show et midnight show
Las Vegas August 22, 1973 dinner show and midnight show

Opening69

From "booth tapes" volume 2.
This is the new Straight Arrow's double-digipak CD release "ENDLESS SUMMER FESTIVAL!", featuring the August 22, 1973 Dinner and Midnight performances. Both shows are taken from original "booth recordings", taped by the same person. The sound quality is far superior to the usual audience recordings. Ask your local dealer for samples! The year's journey from Hawaii to Nevada was almost at its end on August 22, 1973. That Wednesday night, Elvis delivered two professional, sold-out performances for the faithful at the Las Vegas Hilton with a mix of the old and new, including a stunning, yet-to-be recorded cover of Richard Harris' 1971 single, "My Boy." After the final Hilton show on September 3, bass player Emory Gordy would leave to return to the more creative studio environs of Nashville, Presley would instruct manager Tom Parker to leave his employ, his wife Priscilla Beaulieu would leave for good, and Elvis himself would nearly leave the land of the living. It was a long, long way down from that worldwide broadcast in Honolulu on January 14, but the man would survive, somehow, and return to sing his soul that December in Memphis.

It should be noted that neither of these superb-quality, off-line concert recordings have been previously issued. Both shows are completely new, even to die-hard Elvis fans. They were never in circulation, in any form. Enjoy the music!

Las Vegas 23 août 1973 dinner show et midnight show
Las Vegas August 23, 1973 dinner show and midnight show

Opening69

From "booth tapes" volume 3.
The new Straight Arrow's double feature CD release entitled "SIN CITYíS HOTTEST TICKET!", featuring the August 23, 1973 Dinner and Midnight performances. Both shows are taken from original "booth recordings", taped by the same person who recorded previous Straight Arrow's release, "ENDLESS SUMMER FESTIVAL". The sound quality is far superior to the usual audience recordings. Ask your local dealer for samples! Following the great success of the "Aloha" special, Elvis was more in demand than ever, and he was truly the hottest ticket in town. Las Vegas hotels at the time routinely booked their shows 20% over room capacity, because they knew that normally many of those who ordered tickets would not turn up for the shows. In Elvis' case this caused problems, because virtually everybody who ordered tickets DID show up!

In private, Elvis was fighting his personal demons at the time, including a severe Demerol addiction, but on stage he was delivering the goods. Perhaps his delivery was not quite as tight as at earlier Vegas engagements, but he was in good voice and genuinly seemed to enjoy the interaction with the fans. The shows presented here are two solid, engaging performances with plenty of highlights, including a gorgeous "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" and a rare-for-this-engagement one to last performance of "Something".

It should be noted that neither of these superb-quality, off-line concert recordings have been previously issued. The August 23, 1973 Dinner show is completely new, even to die-hard Elvis fans. This concert was never in circulation, in any form.

Las Vegas 23 août 1972 dinner show
Las Vegas August 23, 1972 dinner show

Opening69

The new Straight Arrow CD release titled "WALKIN' TALKIN' GLITZ CITY BLUES", featuring the August 23rd, 1972 Dinner show. It is taken from an original mono audience recording in remarkably good sound. Yes, we used the original actual cassette that was used to record this concert in the first place, and we were able to improve the sound-quality noticeably. Ask your local dealer for samples!

It's unlikely that anyone who saw Elvis Presley on stage during the Summer '72 engagement came away disappointed. Presley looked fabulous: he had a nice tan, he was slim, and both the jumpsuit and the jacket / pants combinations that he was experimenting with looked rather good on him. His shows that season were tight and highly professional, and truly offered something for everybody. The setlist was largely based on the MSG one, with new additions like "What Now My Love" and "My Way" adding extra spice to the show. The dinner show from August 23rd, 1972 is a topnotch performance. Heís right in the middle of the engagement, with still about two weeks left, but he delivers the goods and puts his soul especially into the power ballads. It's not unlikely that he may have wanted to impress journalist Joe Delaney, a reviewer for the Las Vegas Sun and an old friend of the Colonel's, who was in the audience that night.

It should be noted that the August 23, 1972 Dinner show is completely new, even for die-hard Elvis fans. This concert has never been in circulation in any form. Unfortunately the tape ran out before the finale of "My Way". The producers decided to use (great sounding) original tapes of the August 22nd, 1972 M/S and the August 23rd, 1972 M/S from their vaults, to fill out the missing part.

This release is presented in Straight Arrow's traditional deluxe digipack, designed by one of the best graphic artists in the Elvis world, rare photos from this engagement (he actually wore the blue swirl at this show) as well as intelligent liner-notes that give you the low-down on this show. No need for us to toot our own horn really, since you all know it by now: Straight Arrow delivers.

Tracklist:
01. Introduction: Also Sprach Zarathustra - 02. C. C. Rider - 03. Johnny B. Goode - 04. Until It's Time For You To Go - 05. You Don't Have To Say You Love Me - 06.

ON A WINNING STREAK - SA/SP 2014-22-02 (3 cds)

et 18 février 1973 dinner show
Las Vegas February 17, 1973 dinner show and midnight show
and February 18, 1973
dinner show

Opening69

From "booth tapes" volume 4.
Straight Arrow future his the first 3CD set "On A Winning Streak", featuring three strong shows as recorded on February 17 (DS + MS) and 18 (DS), 1973… which means that all of it was recorded within a day. This release documents what a strain it was on Elvis' creativity and general well-being to be performing under such a tight schedule for a whole month, but it also shows how well he actually coped under the circumstances. All three shows are tight, lively and entertaining, and you can really hear that the whole room was buzzing with excitement at his shows. All three shows are well-paced, featuring a solid selection of concert favorites as well as songs from the recent "Aloha From Hawaii" television special. Elvis is clearly enjoying the interaction with his fans, and there is plenty of that here. Interestingly, he momentarily loses his patience with one loud fan, though he later says that he was "just kidding".

A fascinating release, featuring all three shows in surprisingly good audience recorded sound: in fact, these recordings are amongst the finest audience recorded shows out there. Everything can be heard clearly, including all of Elvis' comments, and the well-balanced and crisp live sound on these recording will make you feel like you are right there in the showroom enjoying the King in person. These tapes were recently rediscovered, we believe that you will agree with us that this is a great find and a real must, and not just for the hardcore collector. Another quality Straight Arrow release!

ADIOS LINCOLN - SA/SP 2014-23-02

Lincoln 20 juin 1977 evening show
Lincoln June 20, 1977 evening show

Opening69

Most of Elvis' musicians prefer not to talk about Elvis' final tours, but whenever they do, they usually agree that final tour was one that should have never been undertaken. It was simply one tour too many. At this stage it was impossible to hide the fact that Elvis was in serious problems.

In any case, the Lincoln concert is one of the finest shows from that last tour. Elvis sounds much better than in Omaha the day before. Surprises include a well-sung "Help Me" and arguably the best ever version of "Unchained Melody", which for the first and only time was performed before the band introductions. Interestingly, and completely unknown until now, is that Elvis asks J.D. Sumner and the Stamps to perform 'Walk That Lonesome Road' during the band intros, which is very unusual for the time frame.

The June 20, 1977 show was first issued on CD in 2004 ("ELVIS ROCKS LINCOLN"). This sloppy edition was taken from an incomplete source, missing 17 minutes. For the first time Straight Arrow offer this concert complete. Using two independent original audience recored tapes, Straight Arrow's sound engineer was able to restore all 73 minutes of Lincoln concert.

This new CD edition is limited to 500 copies. Do not miss one of the best shows from Elvis Presley final tour!

Tracks:
01. Introduction: Also Sprach Zarathustra - 02. C. C. Rider - 03. I Got A Woman / Amen - 04. Love Me - 05. If You Love Me (Let Me Know) - 06. You Gave Me A Mountain - 07. Jailhouse Rock - 08. O Sole Mio (Sherrill Nielsen) / It's Now Or Never - 09. Love Me Tender - 10. Little Sister - 11. (Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear / Don't Be Cruel - 12. Help Me - 13. Unchained Melody - 14. Introduction of vocalists, musicians - 15. Walk That Lonesome Road (J. D. Sumner and The Stamps) - 16. Introduction of vocalists, musicians continues - 17. Early Mornin' Rain - 18. What'd I Say - 19. Johnny B. Goode - 20. Drum Solo (Ronnie Tutt) - 21. Bass Solo (Blues, Jerry Scheff) - 22. Piano Solo (Tony Brown) - 23. I Really Don't Want To Know - 24. Electric Piano Solo (Bobby Ogden) - 25. Jazzing In Vegas (Joe Guercio Orchestra) - 26. Hurt - 27. Hound Dog - 28. Can't Help Falling In Love - 29. Closing Vamp / Announcements.

Las Vegas 24 août 1973 dinner show
Las Vegas August 24, 1973 dinner show

Opening69

From "booth tapes" volume 5.
Liner notes: Imagine being a singer, and really putting your heart into a song. At the same time, your audience is having dinner, and some of them plainly donít give a fuck about you or your singing. They are talking loudly, making noises with their plates, smoking one cigarette after another… Doesn't sound very enticing, does it?

By 1973, it was clear that Elvis' Las Vegas shows had a negative effect on the singer. But even at this stage, he was still impressive as a singer and a performer, and especially on those nights where he really turned on the power, there was nobody like him in Vegas -- or anywhere else, for that matter.

The August 24th, 1973 dinner show is unreleased in any form and was sourced from an original, excellent sounding "booth" tape. What is perhaps most surprising, is that Elvis was still quite focused three weeks into the engagement. In earlier years, the standard had sometimes slipped a bit in the third week, even as early as August '70! Now he delivers a strong show, with "Bridge Over Troubled Water", "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" and "Big Hunk O' Love" being the show highlights. "Heartbreak Hotel" was not a regular during this season up to this point, but he delights the audience with a snappy version of his first million seller. And who knows, at this stage he may well have concluded that heíd found his own "Heartbreak Hotel"…

This show was rediscovered recently and we believe that you will agree with us that this is another great find. A real must - not just for the hardcore collector. Another quality Straight Arrow release!

Tracklist:
01. Introduction: Also Sprach Zarathustra - 02. C. C. Rider - 03. I Got A Woman / Amen - 04. Love Me - 05. Steamroller Blues - 06. You Gave Me A Mountain - 07. Blue Suede Shoes - 08. A NEW DECADE, A NEW SOUND - SA/SP 2014-25-02

Las Vegas 3 février 1970 dinner show et 5 février 1970 dinner show
Las Vegas February 3rd, 1970 dinner show and Februar 5th, 1970 dinner show

Opening69

From Rick Rennie master tapes volume 1.
This is the new Straight Arrow's double-digipak CD release "A NEW DECADE, A NEW SOUND", featuring the February 3rd and 5th, 1970 Dinner shows. Looking back at Elvis' final decade of live shows, there are two Las Vegas engagements that stand out: the August '69 one obviously, but certainly also the one in February '70. Whereas the '69 comeback shows were a natural extension of the NBC '68 special with a strong focus on his classic hits, the second engagement From the way he performed these songs, you could tell that he really loved them and genuinely enjoyed the new direction his career was now taking. Most of the oldies were gone from the setlist. It was a very bold move, especially for an artist whose career in the sixties had been marked by boredom and predictability. Released from the chains of the past, Elvis looked and sounded like a man in full control of his career, and he clearly relished the artistic freedom that was now his.

The fact that the music sounded better than before was due in no small part thanks to the two newcomers to the core band; Glen D. Hardin on piano and Bob Lanning on drums. Hailing from Lubbock, Texas, Hardin grew up with Elvis' music, seemed to know all the songs, and was able to contribute with a lot of ideas. Just as importantly, he wrote fresh arrangements for several of the new songs in the show. Elvis loved these arrangements, and Hardin quickly became a highly valued member of the band. Lanning was & is a true no-nonsense rock & roll drummer, who cites Earl Palmer as a main influence. No surprise therefore that he refused to be speeded up by Elvis (or by anyone else, for that matter), and instead focused on laying down a solid groove. In retrospect, this goes a long way in explaining why the February 1970 recordings are musically more solid than other live recordings from the 70s. With that in mind, we would like to dedicate this special collectors' release to messrs. Hardin and Lanning. Itís worth mentioning that Bob Lanning was ìfoundî quite recently after a 45-year absence, and he will be part of a special Elvis show that will be touring Europe in May 2015! And no doubt it'll be a sensation to hear his tight & fearless drumming again after all these years!

The February 3rd, 1970 D/S was previously released by the Memory Records label ("HAVE SOME FUN TONIGHT", 2002). The February 5th, 1970 D/S was released twice from an inferior source and finally by Memory Records ("INTERNATIONAL EARTHQUAKE", 2002). Those Memory Records releases were engineered and mastered using obsolete hardware and software and for some mysterious reason, both shows were even slightly edited.

12 years have passed, and now it's time for the ultimate re-release of these special recordings - in a new, crisp, dynamic sound, and with no edits. Straight Arrow's release of February 3rd and 5th, 1970 Dinner Shows is taken directly from the original tape transfers made in 2001. Every second was digitally restored from scratch to achieve optimal listening pleasure.

As every Straight Arrow's re-release, this beautifully designed double-digipack edition is limited to 500 copies.

THE KING HOLDS COURT - SA/SP 2014-26-02 (3 cds)

Las Vegas 28 août 1973 dinner show
et Las Vegas 29 août 1973 dinner show et midnight show
Las Vegas August 28, 1973 dinner show and midnight show
and Las Vegas August 29, 1973 dinner show

Opening69

Following the remarkable success of our earlier 3CD set "On A Winning Streak", Straight Arrow is pleased to announce another 3CD collection featuring three more unreleased shows from the Summer 1973 engagement in excellent quality audience recorded audio. The three shows are all strong shows, with Elvis vocally strong (much more than in February '73) and delivering a very varied selection of songs at each of the shows. It's clear that he is in his element here, as his entertaining interaction with the audience and his knock-out vocal performances amply demonstrate. The presence of his daughter Lisa Marie inspires Elvis to give his best.

These shows are a delight, and especially in this clear vibrant audience recorded audio that gives you a true "you are there" feel, they make for captivating listening. The August 28, 1973 D/S and August 29, 1973 D/S and M/S are previously unreleased. A few highlights from the (previously released) August 28, 1973 M/S were added. All 3 shows are taken from 1st generation copies of original audience recorded cassettes, made back in the 70s by English super-fan Rex Martin. Every second was digitally restored, every click manually removed, every drop-out fixed to achieve optimal listening pleasure. If you enjoyed the "On A Winning Streak" set, then you will definitely not be disappointed by its sequel, "The King Holds Court"!

From Rick Rennie master tapes volume 2.

This is the new Straight Arrow's double-digipak CD release, called "LIGHTNING STRIKES TWICE IN PORTLAND!", featuring the November 11th, 1970 and April 27th, 1973 Portland shows. These shows may well represent some of best of Elvis Presley live in the 70s. The Nov. 11th, 1970 recording really captures the raw excitement and electricity of those early tours. Elvis delivers a high octane performance that drives the audience in a frenzy. In parts he sounds a bit unfocused, but overall both Elvis and his audience are having such a ball that any criticisms of his performance are nothing more than nitpicking.

The April 27, 1973 concert in the same city may well be his best show of the year, and is a serious contender for "Elvis' best concert performance in the 70's". Compared to the '70 show, his performance here is tighter, more focused and far more varied. Elvis is vocally strong and he delivers the goods in a knock-out performance.

Both shows were first released by the Live Archives label (1991) using slightly incomplete and inferior sounding copies of original Rick Rennie tapes. Memory Records issued those shows in 2004 ("ON THE ROAD AGAIN" and "SHINING IN PORTLAND" CDs). Those Memory Records releases were engineered and mastered using now obsolete hardware and software. 10 years have passed, and it is right time for the ultimate re-release of these special recordings - in a new, crisp, dynamic sound. Straight Arrow's release of the November 11th, 1970 show appears - for the first time - totally complete. The Opening Vamp and the famous "Elvis has left the building" announcement at the end of show were restored. The 1970 show is taken directly from the original stereo master tape. The 1973 show is taken from better of two existing 1st generation copies made back in 70s (the master tape got lost thru the years). Original tape transfers made in March 2004 have been used. Every second was digitally restored from scratch to achieve optimal listening pleasure. As with every Straight Arrow's release, this beautifully designed double-digipack edition is limited to 500 copies. If you enjoyed "A NEW DECADE, A NEW SOUND", you will enjoy "LIGHTNING STRIKES TWICE IN PORTLAND!" too. These shows never sounded better!

MEET ME... DEL WEBB'S SAHARA TAHOE!

Coming out before holiday season is the final Straight Arrow's single-digipack release of 2014 - "MEET ME... AT DEL WEBB'S SAHARA TAHOE!", featuring May 26th, 1974 Midnight show. While Elvis was alive, many fans dreamt of a chance to meet the man. The best chance that people had to meet him was at the Sahara in Lake Tahoe, where the intimacy of the showroom gave Elvis the possibility to interact with his fans "upclose and personal". Those that were lucky enough to witness the star during one of his shows there in May '74, witnessed a charismatic performer in full control of his art and his audience.

Originally, the May 26th Midnight was supposed to be closing show of the season, but due to the huge demand, special 3am show on May 27th was added. The show on this release is a real audience pleaser, as he flirts with the girls on the frontrow and sings all the 1974 show favorites with verve. This is a rather good audience recording that gives you a frontrow perspective of this delightful performance. Ask your local dealer for samples! The May 26th, 1974 M/S is a completely new concert even for die-hard Elvis fans. It has never been in circulation - in any form. The so called "May 26th, 1974 M/S" audience recording available on tape/CDR is wrongly dated!

"MEET ME... AT DEL WEBB'S SAHARA TAHOE!" is taken from a first generation copy of an original audience recorded cassette, obtained from a collector in the US and the date was verified through several very credible sources. Every second was digitally restored to achieve optimal listening pleasure. Straight Arrow is taking the opportunity to thank Elvis Presley fans all over the World for their loyalty and continual support. We are doing the best to deliver you interesting collectors releases in good sound and eye catching packaging. We are always looking for previously unknown concert recordings or superior sounding versions, compared to what is available on tapes/CDRs/old CDs. The year 2015 is a special anniversary for us - it marks 10 years since our initial CD release titled "PIECES OF MY LIFE". We promise you several surprising releases for 2015 - so stay tuned! The Straight Arrow team would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and prosperous, Happy New Year!
