LOOSE AS A GOOSE! - SA/SP 2015-28-02

Las Vegas 19 août 1970 dinner et midnight show
Las Vegas August 19th, 1970 dinner and midnight show

Opening69

The new Straight Arrow's double-digipak CD release, called "LOOSE AS A GOOSE!", featuring the August 19th, 1970 Las Vegas dinner and midnight shows. These recordings were first released in 1998 („DOUBLE DYNAMITE“ set) and were never re-released - until now.

17 years have passed, and it is the right time for the ultimate release of these special recordings.

To call this new Straight Arrow release „a nice upgrade“ would be like calling the Mona Lisa an „okay“ painting! The label was able to retrieve the first generation Rick Rennie cassettes from the August 19, 1970 dinner & midnight shows (the originals are lost) and then carefully enhanced every second on the tapes. As it turns out, that earlier release of these two show was edited, so this new SA release presents Rick's 1st generations tapes in their complete form for the very first time. To give you an example, the dinner show on „DOUBLE DYNAMITE“ was about 45 mins; now it‘s 56 mins!

Still, one edit remains in the DS recording, the one made by the late Rick Rennie originally. Rick told us about 10 years ago that ‘Love Me Tender’ just went on and on, with Elvis being mostly preoccupied with entertaining a few lucky ladies in the front rows. This went on for almost 15 minutes, and all around him Rick could hear people starting to "boo" Elvis. He felt embarrassed about this moment and edited it from the tape. Interestingly, the label on the tape reads: "Elvis - the booed show. Edited." Even though Elvis’ performance on this night was quite strong overall, you can hear in parts that Rick’s account rings true. Elvis’ off-color jokes receive only polite applause, if even that, and during ‘Polk Salad Annie’, he accidentally falls flat on his face!

But make no mistake about it, even these moments cannot distract from the pure dynamite of Elvis’ vocals & showmanship at the time. Especially on the newer stuff he sings at full throttle. The midnight show is even better: it’s 70 action-packed minutes of Presley at his mightiest, rockinest, lovinest. It’s „Elvis 1970“, and that really says it all for the true fan & connoisseur. Even moreso than the TTWII recordings, these tapes give us a unique insight into Elvis performing live in his element & at the peak of his considerable powers. At the same time, these recordings are significant because they give us the first glimpses of what was to come

As with every Straight Arrow’s „upgrade“, this beautifully designed double-digipack edition is limited to 500 copies. If you enjoyed „A NEW DECADE, A NEW SOUND“ and „LIGHTNING STRIKES TWICE IN PORTLAND“, you will definitely not be disappointed by "LOOSE AS A GOOSE!". These shows never sounded better! Elvis never sounded better!

DOIN' THE BEST I CAN - SA/SP 2015-28-02

Las Vegas 16 février 1973 dinner et midnight show
Las Vegas February 16th, 1973 dinner and midnight show

Opening69

Coming out soon on Straight Arrow is the 2CD set „DOIN‘ THE BEST I CAN”, featuring two shows recorded on February 16. Most Elvis experts agree that the „post Aloha“ winter engagement was his weakest up to that point. Perhaps his inner turmoils played a role, but a rather severe throat infection most definitely did. It was so serious that midnight shows on Feb. 13, 14 and 15 ended up getting cancelled and dinner shows were performed against doctors advice.

At some of the shows it was clear that the infection seriously hampered his ability to sing. Still, being the professional that he was, he tried to do the best he could. This is also what you will hear on the previously unreleased concerts from this engagement on this new Straight Arrow release. Presented in truly excellent audience-recorded audio, they give us interesting insights of Elvis at work under trying circumstances. His voice is not at its best here, his condition prevents him from firing on all cylinders, but still he’s giving solid and professional shows. And that’s one element that certainly deserves to be acknowledged more than it is today.

The February 16, 1973 concerts are taken directly from original „booth recorded tapes.“ The Feb. 16, 1973 D/S was previously released („A DINNER AT THE HILTON“, 2007 and „I'M A STEAMROLLER BABY“, 2008) from an inferior audience recorded source. These CD have nothing to do with Straight Arrow’s excellent „booth tape“ version! The Feb. 16 1973 M/S is a completely new show, even for die-hard Elvis fans. It has never been in circulation - in any form! These tapes were rediscovered recently and we believe that you will agree with us that this is another great find. A real must - not just for the hardcore collector. Another quality Straight Arrow release!

ALMOST DONE, FOLKS! - SA/SP 2015-30-02

Las Vegas 1er septembre 1973 dinner et midnight show
Las Vegas September 1st, 1973 dinner and midnight show

Opening69

Following the remarkable success of our earlier August/September 1973 Las Vegas season releases, Straight Arrow is pleased to announce this new 2CD set, featuring two more previously unreleased shows in topnotch audience recorded quality.

It was the final weekend of Elvis' 1973 Summer Festival, which meant that there was an extra buzz of excitement in and around the Las Vegas Hilton on Saturday 1st September. Elvis pleased his audience with strong renditions of „Steamroller Blues“, „You Gave Me A Mountain“ and „Trouble“. "Bridge Over Troubled Water“ was given the respect it deserved - especially during the Midnight show, when Elvis wasn't satisfied with his rendition and repeated most of the song. He said that when he did something, he liked to get the sound right. Elvis treated fans to his emotive new song, „My Boy“ - a song which was not recorded in studio until December '73. Since Presley Senior was in the audience, Elvis sang one of his father's favourite songs, „The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face“. The grand finale of both concerts was powerhouse „How Great Thou Art“ - with reprised ending. The September 1, 1973 D/S and M/S are previously unreleased. Both shows are taken from 1st generation copies of original audience recorded cassettes, made back in the 70s by English super-fan and collector Rex Martin. Every second was digitally restored, every click manually removed, every drop-out fixed to achieve optimal listening pleasure. Double digipak is filled with (some previously unpublished!) August 1973 photographs and an eye-witness text written by an English fan, who was there!

Updated March 9, 2015

The first time ever I saw your face".

ELVIS '70: HOT TO TROT! - SA/SP 2015-31-02

Las Vegas 20 août 1970 dinner et midnight show
Las Vegas August 20th, 1973 dinner and midnight show

Opening69

From „The Rick Rennie master tapes“ Vol. 4

Coming out of the 4th volume of Straight Arrow's „FROM THE RICK RENNIE MASTERTAPES“ series - a double-digipak CD release, called "ELVIS ’70: HOT TO TROT!", featuring the August 20th, 1970 Las Vegas dinner and midnight shows. These recordings, last released in January 2004 by Memory records, have not been reissued since then. To achieve the best possible results, Straight Arrow worked from a direct digital transfer of the original 120 minute cassette.

Roughly a week after MGM had left town, Elvis Presley had finally settled on a format for his show that he felt comfortable with and that resonated with his Vegas audiences. He had tried out many different songs during the first two weeks of his engagement: some worked, others didn't. The shows that are included here capture a confident Elvis who at this stage clearly loved performing in Las Vegas. His powerful voice, warm stage personality & cool sense of humor really shine on these recordings, and give the listener a true sense of what it was like to see the man on stage in his prime. Elvis is clearly in his element, singing a well-balanced set that features both the cream of his recent recordings as well as solid versions of his classics. He even jams with the band on brief versions of 'Memphis Tennessee' and 'More'. As with every Straight Arrow’s upgrade, this beautifully designed double-digipack edition is limited to 500 copies. If you enjoyed our previous volumes of the „FROM THE RICK RENNIE MASTER TAPES“ series, you cannot go wrong with " ELVIS ’70: HOT TO TROT!" Newly remastered from the best possible source, these recordings are a real delight for the true Elvis aficionado!

Las Vegas 21 août 1970 dinner et midnight show
Las Vegas August 21st 1970 dinner and midnight show

Opening69

From „The Rick Rennie master tapes“ Vol. 5

Coming out is the 5th volume of Straight Arrow's „FROM THE RICK RENNIE MASTERTAPES“ series - a double-digipak CD release, called "OL' SNAKE HIPS IS IN TOWN!", featuring the August 21st, 1970 Las Vegas dinner and midnight shows.

Of the six shows that Rick recorded during this engagement, the shows on August 21st, 1970 were his favorite. The shows captured here represent Elvis at his zenith. His enthusiasm for performing live in front of an audience is so obvious, and his powerful charisma shines brighter than ever. Interestingly, he performs 'Tiger Man' as stand-alone versions here, and introduces it as his "second record" in a very matter-of-fact way. He also sings a snatch of the Buck Owens classic 'Crying Time', which really makes you wish that he'd recorded a proper version of it.

The August 21st, 1970 Dinner show was first released in 1998 („FROM VEGAS TO MACON“) and reissued in 2011 („AUGUST RELOADED“). The August 21st, 1970 Midnight show was first released in 2001 („YOU'VE LOST THAT LOVIN' FEELIN'“) and was never re-released - until now.

As with every Straight Arrow’s upgrade, this beautifully designed double-digipak edition is limited to 500 copies. If you enjoyed previous volumes of the „FROM THE RICK RENNIE MASTER TAPES“ series, you cannot go wrong with "OL' SNAKE HIPS IS IN TOWN!". If you're a fan who only wants his finest shows - get it. If you're a fan who's not too well -versed on audience recordings - make sure that this one is your first purchase. If you are a collector who knows Straight Arrow and appreciates what the label stands for - then getting this new release is your # 1 priority. Another true gem from the label that cares.

From „The Rick Rennie master tapes“ Vol. 6

Coming out is the 6th and last volume of Straight Arrow's „FROM THE RICK RENNIE MASTERTAPES“ series - a double-digipak CD release, called "THE MAN FROM MEMPHIS", featuring the May 13th 3am 1973 and Portland, November 26th, 1976 shows.

Every great story have its beginning and the end. With this special release, we conclude our „Rick Rennie recordings“ series. We are delighted with the good feedback and excellent reviews that this series has received thus far. And it has been a pleasure to give Rick's recordings new life, attention and care that they deserve.

Technically, Lake Tahoe show is one of Rick's finest recordings. Yes we are aware that FTD label released a soundboard of this highly unusual concert back in 2003, but we feel that this tape is very much listenable and definitely more atmospheric, compared with rather sterile soundboard that they put out. Additionally, Rick's recording captured moments from this show that are not on the soundboard, including the reprise of the 2001 Theme and the second Closing vamp.

The Portland '76 show was the last one captured by Rick. A lot had happened in the three years between the shows on this release, but the Portland concert is actually a pretty decent one for the time. Elvis had lost some weight since the previous tour, he was in good voice, and he seemed a little more upbeat at these shows, though he still looked tired in photos.

Without guys like Rick Rennie, we would be missing many interesting pieces of the Elvis story. Rick had the foresight to capture the excitement of Elvis in concert, and his body of work deserves a place in the collection of every serious Elvis scholar.

As with every Straight Arrow’s upgrade, this beautifully designed double-digipak edition is limited to 500 copies. If you have enjoyed previous five volumes of the „FROM THE RICK RENNIE MASTER TAPES“ series, you cannot go wrong with our "MAN FROM MEMPHIS" set!

Syracuse 25 et 27 juillet 1976 evening show
Syracuse July 25th and 27th, 1976 evening show

Opening69

Following the remarkable success of our „From The Rick Rennie Mastertapes“ series, it is time to move on to yet another exciting project. Straight Arrow is pleased to announce this new 2CD set, featuring two concerts from the July/August Bicentennial tour, in topnotch audience recorded quality. It was somewhat problematic tour and especially at the end of July and first days of August, Elvis' voice was affected by some kind of laryngitis.

Nevertheless, the two concerts from Onondaga War Memorial Auditorium in Syracuse are examples of two solid Presley concerts, with Presley sounding clear and enthusiastic, and in good voice. Both shows were taken directly from recently found original audience-recorded mastertapes. The July 25th, 1976 show was released in 2002 on a CD called „Stormin’ Syracuse“ from an inferior and incomplete (14 minutes missing!) source. The July 27th show is previously unreleased. Every second was digitally restored, every click manually removed, every drop-out fixed to achieve optimal listening pleasure.

This special release is presented in a de-luxe double digipack, accompanied by a 20-page booklet filled with many professional photos from July 27th and positive press reviews of both shows. Photos from July 25th are extremely rare (amateurish snapshots only). A couple of them have been added in spite of problematic quality, for historic reasons.

Las Vegas 24 août 1972 dinner show
Las Vegas August 24th, 1972 dinner show

Opening69

Now is the new Straight Arrow single CD titled "BURNING HOT TONIGHT", featuring the Las Vegas, August 24th, 1972 Dinner show.

This is a previously unreleased mono audience recording in remarkably good sound. It is taken from a recently found source which has never been in circulation (however, an alternate recording in inferior quality is out there, but this new source is far better quality). Straight Arrow's sound man was able to improve the sound quality noticeably.

The dinner show from August 24th, 1972 is another topnotch performance by Elvis. He’s right in the middle of the engagement, with still about two weeks left, but he delivers the goods and puts his soul especially into the power ballads. As usual, this release is presented in Straight Arrow's standard deluxe digipack with photos taken at the Las Vegas Hilton hotel in August/September 1972. It was designed by one of the best graphic artists in the Elvis world.

Tracklist:
01. Announcement by Rex Martin - 02. Introduction: Also Sprach Zarathustra - 03. C. C. Rider - 04. Johnny B. Goode - 05. Proud Mary - 06. Until It's Time For You To Go - 07. You Don't Have To Say You Love Me - 08. You Gave Me A Mountain - 09. You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling - 10. Polk Salad Annie - 11. Instrumental Intermezzo / Monologue - 12. What Now My Love - 13. Fever - 14. Love Me - 15. Blue Suede Shoes - 16. Heartbreak Hotel (with reprise) - 17. All Shook Up - 18. Little Sister / Get Back - 19. (Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear / Don' Be Cruel - 20. Hound Dog - 21. Love Me Tender - 22. Suspicious Minds - 23. Introductions of singers, musicians, orchestra - 24. My Way - 25. A Big Hunk O' Love - 26. An American Trilogy - 27. Can't Help Falling In Love.

Las Vegas 20 février 1973 dinner show
Las Vegas Februar 20th, 1973 dinner show

From the „booth tapes“ Vol. 7

Thursday, February 20th, 1973 Dinner Show, Las Vegas Hilton Hotel, Las Vegas, NV

This is the new Straight Arrow CD titled "BRIGHT LIGHTS, BIG CITY", featuring the Las Vegas, February 20th, 1973 Dinner show. This recording is taken directly from an original Rex Martin „booth recorded“ mastertape. When Straight Arrow started releasing the Rex Martin tapes a few years ago, they caused quite a sensation in the Elvis world. For years they were known to exist, but here they finally were, in a quality that's rare for off-line recorded tapes. In fact, these tapes are so good sonically, that they can easily match anything that's out there. They are certainly as good as the Rick Rennie tapes and bring us the true joy of Elvis Presley on stage in a way that many sterile / unbalanced soundboards were never able to do. The cassette A-side label is marked „20th Feb. 73 Dinner show“, and on flipside there's „20th Feb. 73 Midnight show.“ To the producers big disappointment, the B-side was completely empty, perhaps recorded over / erased by mistake! So the recording of the 20th February 1973 Midnight show is – very likely – lost forever…

Nevertheless, the Feb. 20th, 1973 D/S is another completely new concert recording, even for die-hard Elvis fans. It has never been in circulation - in any form, and the sound quality is exceptionally good!

As usual, our new release is presented in Straight Arrow's standard deluxe digipack. Since there is a hand written notice on the cassette label: „Blue Suit / Silver Stars”, the producers assume that Elvis appeared in the „Owl suit“ - the only blue jumpsuit designed with silver stars. For this reason, we have decided to design the digipack with a collection of photos of Elvis wearing the „Owl suit“, as taken in November 1972.

Tracklist:
01. Orchestra Intro - 02. Introduction: Also Sprach Zarathustra - 03. C. C. Rider - 04. I Got A Woman / Amen - 05. Love Me Tender - 06. You Don't Have To Say You Love Me - 07. Steamroller Blues - 08. You Gave Me A Mountain - 09. Fever - 10. Love Me - 11. Blue Suede Shoes - 12. I’m Leavin’ - 13. Hound Dog - 14. What Now My Love - 15. Suspicious Minds - 16. Introductions of singers, musicians, orchestra - 17. Introduction of actor George Montgomery - 18. (Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear) / Don’t Be Cruel - 19. Can’t Stop Loving You (with false start) - 20. An American Trilogy - 21. Can't Help Falling In Love - 22. Closing Vamp / Announcements.

SOLID AS ROCK - SA/SP 2015-37-02

Las Vegas 27 août 1971 dinner show et midnight show
Las Vegas August 27, 1971 dinner show and midnight show

-

Friday, August 27th, 1971 Dinner & Midnight Shows, Las Vegas International Hotel, Las Vegas, NV

Straight Arrow is very pleased to bring you, as a first for the label, two concerts from 1971: The Las Vegas August 27th, 1971 dinner & midnight shows. And what a delight it is to get fresh tapes from this year, and from this season, and in rather decent sound too - a rarity for early Vegas seasons. The August 27th, 1971 Dinner and Midnight Shows are taken directly from an original audience recorded master tape Straight Arrow team is always looking for rare, unknown or seemingly lost recordings. Once again, the labels researchers were successful - the Aug. 27, 1971 D/S is a completely new show, even for die-hard Elvis fans. It has never been in circulation - in any form!

The Aug. 27, 1971 M/S was previously released from an awful sounding source. This release have nothing to do with Straight Arrow’s independently taped version! It's an added bonus that these shows are in rather pleasing sound, which is somewhat rare for 1971. This is also a year which is still a bit "under the radar", so any new recordings and insights from that year are most welcome.

Elvis' previous engagement there had shown clear signs of his high performing standard slipping, but here it sounds like he's back on track again. Both shows are tight, no-nonsense affairs with Presley in good voice and in strong form. He performs with focus and professionalism, and he sings a fantastic variety of music. It's interesting to note that already in '71, the difference between the dinner and midnight shows was becoming noticeable. Elvis sounds a tad low-key during parts of the dinner show, but he's firing on all cylinders a couple of hours later - the midnight show is truly sensational! This release is presented in a de-luxe double digipack, collection of photos taken in Del Webbs Sahara Tahoe hotel and at the Las Vegas International hotel in July and August, 1971. Some 1971 candid shots have also been added.

At a time when most labels are perfectly happy to keep on reissuing stuff that you already have in your collection, you can at least count on Straight Arrow to go that extra mile and bring you something new. And this fine release is yet another good example of that.
